The Outsider

We began looking at Todorovs "chain of cause and effect". This means that any film can have a number of different events, and it can be changed round to gain different narratives, for example:

EQUILIBRIUM > DISRUPTION > NEW EQUILIBRIUM > CLOSURE A film doesnt always contain closure at the end. Sometimes it is called "Apeture" where the film is left on a cliffhanger.

For example, looking at a plot of a crime film, this series of events could be changed round to form different narrative plots:
EG:

A) CRIME COMMITTED

B) CRIME DISCOVERED
C) CRIME INVESTIGATED
D) CRIME SOLVED
E) CRIME'S CRIMINAL CAUGHT/ KILLED/ ESCAPED/ IDENTIFIED

Here are 6 different ways of using this narrative: 1) ABECD
2) EABCD
3) ABCED
4) ACBDE
5) BACED
6) EABCDE

We then looked at 3 films that all share a similar narrative, A Fistful of Dollars (1964), Yojimbo (1961) and Last Man Standing (1996).
A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS
1) Arrival in town on horse.
2) Sees dead man on horse- DANGER WARNING
3) Cruelty/Crime is witnessed
4) Mocked by gang
5) Seeks refuge in inn
6) Takes revenge!

YOJIMBO
1) Arrival in town (throws stick to decide on direction) on foot.
2) Sees a dog with a hand- DANGER WARNING
3) Witnesses a crime/cruelty
4) Mocked by gang
5) Seeks refuge with inkeeper
6) Takes revenge on gang

LAST MAN STANDING
1) Arrives in town (spins a bottle to decide direction) in car.
2) Sees a dead horse- DANGER WARNING
3) Mocked by gang
4) Seeks refuge inside inn
5) Takes revenge

All of these films share similar music, same or similar jokes and the same type of characters. We were then asked to create our own movie called "The Outsider" Using this narrative theme.

Our version: Action horror movie. There has been a nuclear attack on a town, there are 2 gangs: survivors and zombies/infected people from the attack. A female survivor from a different town arrives.

1) Arrival in town on motorcycle
2) She sees a dead, infected person- DANGER WARNING
3) To decide which way to go, she uses a gun, right is a blank left is a bullet. She goes left.
4) As she walks into town, people mock her for being a woman, telling her she cant help. A zombie then attacks her and a man runs to help and gets scratched , they both seek refuge in the inn.
5) The inkeeper gives her food and information on the coffin maker, he is the only one being useful
6) she leaves, and takes revenge on the zombie that scratched the man. Everyone sees her bravery and realises her capability.

Short Films

People make short films for several different reasons. Indie films such as "End of the Tour" are about revenge and also can send ourt a serious message to viewers about loss or betrayal. People make short films for many reasons. Some students could possibly make short films for a portfolio that may be needed for a college or university course or to become the next big thing. Short films are a really good way of showing your work and what you are capable of in the film industry. Short films are also made because they are easier and dont cost as much money. People on a tight budget can still produce award winning films that are only 5-30 minutes long. Short films are also a great opportunity for hopeful actors and actresses to start their career. Short films tend to be watched by artistic people, or students.

People get the chance to showcase their creations at film festivals. Some of these festivals are:
-LONDON SHORT FILM FESTIVAL http://2011.shortfilms.org.uk/
-FUTURE SHORTS SHORT FILM FESTIVAL http://futureshorts.com/calendar-city-screenings.php
-ENCOUNTERS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL http://www.encounters-festival.org.uk/

This first movie is called Bubblegum. It appears on the BBC Film Network website and is an animated short. I really like this film, although the drawings aren't brilliant, it shows you don't have to be a fantastic drawer in order to create a good animated short film. the music also fits with the happy and colourful theme and the cute main character means that the film is watchable for every age.The second is a short 5 minute film called Get off My Land. I think the concept of the film is good and contains a good twist but the acting and parts of the narrative let it down. For example, as the story line only really lasts for 3 minutes, i think ther could have been added more into it, such as a background of the farmer or maybe even the couple's journey being longer before they got onto the private land so we could see the relationship between them. I do think that the camera techniques are good though and that the different types of shots and music in the background go well with the theme and general feel of the film.

Introduction

Hello
My name is Hannah Sowerby and I am a student at Prior Pursglove College.
This is my A2 Advanced Portfolio which shows a short film that I created, based on the genre of Romantic Comedy.

We had 2 weeks to create, edit and finish a final piece of short film which will last 30 seconds.
During our short film, we had to show knowledge and use of a range of camera techniques to create a professional finishing project.

The types of shots we had to use were:
Match Cuts
Shot Reverse Shot
Cross Cut

We had tight restrictions on movement, so we were not allowed to use camera tracking or zoom in and out during takes.
This did prove some difficulty, but as a group we managed to cope with the restrictions and made a comical project with a romantic theme.

The storyline includes the idea of a teenage girl finding out she is pregnant and the peer pressure she faces to tell her parents and to think of her options.
This idea we had created  should give an insight into the mind of teenage girls who have faced with these problems in today's society.
Even though, the idea of being a teenage mother is a serious matter which takes alot of thought, we tried to focus on the light hearted side of the matter, which is usually dismissed in our culture. The use of the  teenage girl's sister bouncing up and down on the bed; creating a sexual innuendo in a serious moment between the potential parents, does create a sense of comedy to counteract the confusion and fear which the couple face.

The Script

Person 1: Do it! ( boyfriend)
Person 2: I cant! ( pregnant girlfriend)
Person 3: Do it! I cant wait for you to do it! ( pregnant girlfriend's sister)
